Ways to help when someone is hospitalized...
There are many normal daily activities that get set aside in the days and weeks consumed with medical tests, doctor visits, surgeries, physical therapy, chemotherapy, and such. What follows are a few specific ways to help that special someone in need.
How to help
-
Begin by asking, "How can I help?" Or, better yet, don't ask. Instead take responsibility for a specific task and tell the family when it will be completed. If your neighbor is away at the hospital, get their newspaper, mail, or deliveries. When you visit the hospital, you can be their "mail person." - Which provides some comfort and support in knowing certain daily activities are being cared for.
-
If your concern is for someone now home from the hospital, consider what needs they may have. You might provide a ready-to-cook meal. A gift card to a restaurant might help them. Asking if you might help by doing their grocery shopping might relieve your home-bound friend with one less worry.
-
Because they are home-bound and unable to "do the chores around the house" - (activities like laundry, general housework, dishes, and transportation comes to mind), ask if you might lend a helping hand and be of service.
-
Assure the "patient" that they are in your prayers...that God is present to hear and answer all our prayers. Notify the Pastor to include him in for visitation. Let the Church's Prayer Chain actively be involved.
-
When a crisis strikes, many people truly want to help. Faith communities and other groups can pool their energy and resources to help spread the responsibilities among many to reduce the strain over an extended period of time. Whatever your efforts to a person or family in nee of help will be a "God-sent" and welcome relief.
