Every time we come to church, we learn something more about God and the “persons” of God. In the Apostles’ Creed we confess our faith in God in the persons of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 

We believe in God the Father who created all things by His almighty power and made us when we were conceived in our mother’s womb and then born. We believe in Jesus God’s Son who was conceived by the Hoy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. We also know that Jesus lived here on the earth, taught the people God’s Word, healed many people; and did many wonderful miracles to the amazement of the people who believed in Him as the One sent by God to be their Savior.

That is, some people believed in Him… not everyone and that’s true today too… not everyone believes that Jesus is their Savior from sin and death. That’s very sad because God wants all people -everyone to believe in His Son for salvation. 

In the Apostles’ Creed, we confess that Jesus suffered under Pontius Pilate. When Jesus was on trial for His life, a crowd of people and even may church leaders rejected Him and wanted to get rid of Him and His message so, they made up lies about Him so that He would be killed on the cross. But, and you might remember this from Easter time, Jesus prayed to His Father in heaven saying, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing.”

Even though they hated Jesus and crucified Him, Jesus didn’t hate them; He didn’t do something bad to them; He didn’t reject them. Instead, He forgave them. And then, as the Creed says: “He rose from the dead and ascended into heaven.” And that’s good for us to hear. That means when we sin against God and in our own way reject Jesus, God forgives us in Jesus. That’s exactly why God let His Son die on the cross because in this way, He died your death and then He rose again from the dead to raise us up to new life. 

In the last part of the Apostles’ Creed we see this “new life” in the work of the Holy Spirit who gives us the faith to believe all that God has said and done for us through “the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.” All this is all ours that we may thank God and give Him our praise.

Prayer: Thank You, God, for sending Jesus to us and all people that we and they might believe in Him as our Savior and be saved from sin and death. Help us always to confess and believe in God: the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit in our words and deeds. In Jesus’ name, we pray. AMEN
